Before applying

To become a wildland firefighter, you first need to posses a valid Red Card. If you don’t have one, you can acquire it by completing the critical 80. There are also options to take red card classes either in-person or online depending on your location. These typically start early in the year before the season kicks off. You can follow this link or ask us during your interview.

If you are coming with prior experience from outside the state of Alaska, from another resource or crew, then you’ll need an RT-130 refresher course.

How to apply?

Applying can be done through Workplace Alaska. First, create an account, then look up White Mountain on the search bar, or click on this link. Find the position you would like to apply for, read the description, then hit the green “apply” button in the upper right corner. Fill out the information you are asked to submit.

Once you have applied, we will get in contact with you to schedule an interview. Be patient, this process can take multiple weeks.

During the interview you’ll be walked through the next steps of what you will need for the upcoming fire season on the crew.

Post-hiring

Upon arrival, you will be put through two weeks of very demanding physical training, known as the “Critical 80” (learn more on fitness tab). Furthermore, you will be taught the specifics of Alaska fire operations through different in-person and online classes, that will prepare you for the upcoming fire season.
